Huge Turnout for the 2013 Mount Ida Dodgeball Tournament

Huge Turnout for the 2013 Mount Ida Dodgeball Tournament

The Mount Ida College Athletic Center was full of people who came to cheer on their favorite teams as the 2013 Mustang Dodgeball Tournament was underway on Thursday night.  Nine teams took the court in a single elimination contest and all were in top physical form to make a push for the championship.

This was the third year of the annual Mount Ida dodge ball tournament, but the first being run by the sport management department.  The Sport Practicum II class organized the entire event, with funding from the Mount Ida Intramural department, and they did not disappoint.  Teams were encouraged to wear original and creative uniforms, music was blasting, referees were wearing official striped shirts and even the dodgeballs used were the official dodgeballs of the governing sport.  It was a very exciting event and everybody involved was ready to go.

Team America, headed by Chaz Strom was bounced from the tournament in the first round, but that didn’t stop the team from taking home the best uniform prize; each received a pair of neon ADIDAS socks.  Each team that made it to the final four round was awarded with an official 2013 Dodgeball Tournament T-Shirt and when it got down to the finals, that’s when the real heat was being thrown.

The stage was set on center court for a back and forth battle, consisting of 5 double switches (when one team catches a ball and one of their players is able to come back to the court) and finishing with a 4 on 1 firing squad.  The Dodge Fathers, lead by Ryan Richardson, had a 3-2 player advantage before two straight caught balls by Puppin Studs set up the final 4 on 1 showdown.  Kevin McKeon, of the Dodge Fathers, was running for his life and trying to come up with a miracle by catching a ball to help turn the tides back into his teams favor, but 4 balls coming at you at once is a hard thing to overcome.  It didn’t take long before Puppin Studs was being rushed on the court as they celebrated their championship.  Puppin Studs consisted of captain Zach Davis, Jon Berry, Zach Rosen, Corey Gelbstein, Joe Galante and Shaun Royce.
