Annual Turkey Trot 5K, A Great Tradition

Annual Turkey Trot 5K, A Great Tradition

The 6th annual Mount Ida College Turkey Trot took place today on a brisk afternoon around the beautiful Newton campus.

The Turkey Trot is a fun run/walk race and consists of three loops around the outside of the campus’ main road. The annual Thanksgiving week tradition is run by the sport management departments Sport Practicum II class and sponsored by the Mount Ida Intramural department.  After last year’s snowy event, the brisk autumn air was a breath of fresh air during this year’s annual event.   A small $3.00 fee for students and a $5.00 fee for faculty and staff get donated back to the school for a general scholarship fund.

This year’s event hosted 20 runners who were each given an official Turkey Trot T-Shirt for participating. With music playing at the start/finish line, runners and walkers were ready to show of their skill.  From the beginning eventual winner Jabari Bradley left the competition in the dust setting a new course record at 18:11.  Jabari is a member of the Mount Ida cross country team and was the schools top runner for the entire season.  On the men’s side James Ames and Andrew Shaw finished with their arms around each other’s shoulders with a time of 19:49 to share second place.  For the women, Nikki Keenan (a member of the Mustangs lacrosse program) finished first with a time of 21:21 and was just behind the 3 leading males.

The race was all for fun with a few people choosing to walk the race and just have a few laughs and good conversation and even though the day was cold, there seemed to be a big smile on every face at the end.
