Women’s Cross Country Runs to Second Place Finish at Pine Manor

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Mount Ida College women's cross country team took second place in the 2014 Pine Manor Invitational on Thursday afternoon, a 5k event held on the campus of Pine Manor College.

Freshman Jessica Roberts (Mendon, Mass.) took second place overall in the 25-runner field, leading the Mustangs with a time of 22:07. Senior Emily Bernotas (Sunderland, Mass.) was just behind her in fourth place, at 23:47, and the Mustangs looked strong as the first runners came through the finish line.

Senior Leslie Campbell (Quincy, Mass.) was a top-ten finisher for Mount Ida as well, placing 7th in a time of 25:30, her best time of the season through five races.

Sydney Fredette (Hudson, Mass.) finished 12th for the Mustangs, with a time of 27:55, and Parin Dardin (Martha's Vineyard, Mass.) finished off the Mount Ida team score with a 16th place showing in 29:15, also a personal best in her third race of the year.

Just behind her in 17th position was Heather Malafonte (W. Bridgewater, Mass.), who ran the course in 29:21 in her Mount Ida cross country debut.

Roberts led the pack off the start line, but was caught by Massachusetts Maritime's Mara Footit, who led the entire rest of the race and took the overall title in a time of 21:14.

She helped Mass. Maritime take the team crown as well in the four-team field that also included the host Gators, who took third, and Daniel Webster College. The Mustangs finished with 41 points, just six points behind the Buccanneers, who had runners place fifth, eighth, tenth, and eleventh.

Pine Manor finished with 63 points, led by third place finisher Maria Vaughan (23:14), while Daniel Webster had a score of 88.

Mount Ida takes this weekend off before travelling to the Emmanuel College Invitational on October 17th at 4:00 pm.
