NEWTON, Mass. -- The visiting Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) collected a 3-1 victory over the Mustangs in non-conference fashion on Tuesday evening at the Mount Ida Athletic Center.
The Engineers took the first set 25-14, before seeing the Mustangs from from behind in the second set, 25-23, and eventually winning the third and final set, 25-10, 25-16.
Mount Ida got a team high nine kills from junior MaryKate Reidy (Agawam, Mass.) while Kristy Walton (Fairhaven, Mass.) collected four of her own and teammates Maggie Barros (Tyngsboro, Mass.) and Meghan Martowski (Ludlow, Mass.) collected three each.
Alexis Bell (Salem, Conn.) notched a team high 19 assists while Engineer Christina Liao (Warren, N.J.) padded a game high 30. Bell, Reidy and Katherine Eastwood (Amityville, N.Y.) all recorded five digs apiece but saw Walton pad a team high six. Reidy also added two service aces while Walton and Molly Alkinburg (Port Deposit, Md.) each had one.
MIT senior Meghan Gebhard (Howell, Mich.) led the Engineers with 10 kills to go along with one assist and one dig. Tori Wuthrich (Grosse Point Woods, Mich.) collected 18 digs herself along with four assists while Alli Davanzo (St. John's, Fla.) and Carly Staub (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.) totaled seven and six kills respectively. Fiona Tanuwidjaja (Renton, Wash.) added nine of her own assists in the victory for MIT. Clare Farley (La Jolla, Calif.) and Alexis Groark (Hungtinton, N.Y.) both had three service aces in the game, a game high.
The Mustangs will return to the hardwood on Thursday night when they travel to UMass Dartmouth with game time slated for 6:00 PM. MIT will also return to action this week on Friday when they take on SUNY Oneonta with that game also set to begin at 6:00 PM.
