NEWTON, Mass. – With both teams looking for their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) win, Mount Ida College earned a 3-1 victory over visiting Albertus Magnus College in women's volleyball action on Wednesday evening at Mount Ida Athletic Center.
The Mustangs took the first set 25-18 and looked like they were on their way to a 2-0 lead when they led the second set 18-7, but Albertus came storming back to take the second set 26-24. Mount Ida was able to edge the Falcons 25-21 in the third set and then collected the victory with a 25-20 win in set four.
With the win, Mount Ida improve to 7-10 on the year and 1-3 in the GNAC, while Albertus Magnus drops to 5-11 and 0-3 in conference play.
Three different players tallied double-digit kills for the home team, who were led by 15 kills apiece from Mary Kate Reidy (Agawam, Mass.) and Kristy Walton (Fairhaven, Mass.).
Reidy made it a double-double with 12 digs, while Molly Alkinburg (Port Deposit, Md.) had 13 kills and three service aces.
The tandem of Amber Cohens (Hamden, Conn.) and Ashley David (West Islip, N.Y.) combined for 26 kills to lead Albertus, who saw their offense run through freshman Jesselle Guzman (Santa Teresa, N.M.).
Guzman put up 20 assists and also had 12 digs, one of five Falcons who put up double digits in the digs column, including David's game-high 19 digs.
Freshman Alexis Bell (Salem, Conn.) had 39 assists, 14 digs, and four kills while hitting .364 on eleven attempts. Meghan Martowski (Tyngsboro, Mass.) attacked at a .385 clip, and Alkinburg made just one error for a .462 percentage for the Mustangs, who hit .222 as a team.
Cohens attacked at a .522 pace, making just two errors and slamming 14 kills on 23 attempts.
Mount Ida takes a break from conference play this weekend when they head to Weston, Mass. for a tri-match with the host Regis Pride and the Worcester State Lancers.
Albertus has a conference tri-match this weekend at Emmanuel College with the Saints and fellow Boston foes Suffolk University.
