NEWTON, Mass. – Visiting Newbury College collected a 3-0 victory this morning over the Mustangs in non-conference women's volleyball action at Mount Ida Athletic Center.
The Nighthawks took 25-21 wins in each of the first two sets before shutting down a Mount Ida comeback with a come-from-behind 26-24 victory in the final set to hand the Mustangs the defeat.
Mount Ida got eleven kills from senior Molly Alkinburg (Port Deposit, Md.) and ten kills from junior Mary Kate Reidy (Agawam, Mass.).
Those numbers matched the leaders for Newbury, as Kataya Sykes (Brockton, Mass.) had eleven kills along with 2.5 blocks, and Courtney Banks (Corona, Calif.) had ten kills, along with nine digs and one of nine service aces for the Nighthawks.
Three of those aces came from both Gabby Aldaco (Springdale, Ark.) and Lindsey Clark (Venice, Fla.), while the Mustangs were led in serving by Reidy, who had three of nine aces as well.
Defensively, Alysha Dunbar (Quincy, Mass.) had 15 digs and Kristy Walton (Fairhaven, Mass.) added ten digs, with each of them also serving two aces, as did freshman Alexis Bell (Salem, Conn.), who put up 26 assists.
Newbury got a team-high 13 digs out of Aldaco, who had three kills, while setter Marlen Reynoso (Springdale, Ark.) matched Bell with 25 assists of her own.
The Green and White led 23-20 and 24-23 in the third set with the chance to force another game, but the visitors won the final three points, capped by a kill from Banks.
Mount Ida (6-7) returns to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play next Wednesday night when they travel to Boston for a 7:00 pm game against Suffolk.
Newbury improves to 4-4 on the season and hosts WPI this Tuesday at 7:00 pm in non-league action.
