Mustangs Victimized by Lynx Five-Set Comeback

NEWTON, Mass. – With 26-24 and 25-15 wins, Mount Ida took control of their non-conference women's volleyball match against Lesley University on Monday night, but the Lynx fought back with three straight set victories to earn a 3-2 win at Mount Ida Athletic Center.

The Lynx even their record at 6-6 while recording their third straight victory, winning the third and fourth sets 25-16 and 25-15 before overwhelming Mount Ida 15-2 in the fifth and deciding game.

Sophomore Mary Kate Reidy (Agawam, Mass.) led all players with a career-high 21 kills, two shy of the Mount Ida five-set record.

Senior Taylor Davis (Machiasport, Maine) posted 35 assists in the loss, which started with Mount Ida fighting back from a 5-0 deficit off the bat, also erasing a 14-10 lead to take a 22-16 advantage. With Mount Ida on the cusp of victory, leading 24-19, the Lynx came back with two straight service aces by Anni Abbruzzese (Croton on Hudson, N.Y.). Lesley tied the match at 24, but kills by Reidy and Alysha Dunbar (Quincy, Mass.) helped the Mustangs escape with a 1-0 lead.

The first set was the only really tight affair, as the Mustangs leaped out to a 2-0 lead after opening up the second game from a 10-9 edge to a 19-11 vantage on the serving back of Molly Alkinburg (Port Deposit, Md.), who had five kills and was in on four blocks.

Ciara Bruning (Centerville, Mass.) led the Lynx with six kills and Abbruzzese and Sarah Hollis (Hudson, Mass.) added five kills apiece, while Abbruzzese had six of the 13 service aces for Lesley.

The Lynx fought off the next two sets to force a deciding final set, where they leapt out to a 5-0 lead thanks to three service aces by senior Emily Marden (Fremont, Calif.), who had five service aces, three kills and a team-high 21 assists.

Reidy earned a kill to get Mount Ida on the board, but Abbruzzese served two more aces and Mount Ida made five errors as Lesley raced to the comeback win.

Senior Kelcey Koolman (Bedford, N.H.) had 19 digs to lead Mount Ida, one of five Mustangs in double-digits in that category.

Lesley senior Danielle McDonald (Lilitz, Penn.) led all players with 25 digs.

Mustang freshman Alison Cox (Chelmsford, Mass.) saw her first action as a collegiate athlete and registered a kill on her only attempt.

Mount Ida (5-9) returns to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on Wednesday evening when they travel to Emmanuel College for a 7:00 pm game.

Lesley also returns to conference play with a 1:00 pm game on Saturday at Mitchell College.
