Corsairs Hand Mustangs First Loss in Home Opener

NEWTON, Mass. – Mount Ida College saw their three-game win streak to start the season come to a close on Thursday night as they suffered a 3-0 defeat to visiting UMass Dartmouth in the Mustang's women's volleyball home opener at Mount Ida Athletic Center.

The Corsairs improved to 3-4 on the year by winning three tight sets, with scores of 25-23, 25-22, and 25-19, sending the Mustangs to 3-1 on the season.

Sophomore Mary Kate Reidy (Agawam, Mass.) led all players with 11 kills, while junior Megan Ronaghan (North Attleboro, Mass.) notched seven kills for the Corsairs.

The Mustangs fell behind 7-2 to start the opening set, but charged back to tie the match at seven thanks to a run served by Taylor Davis (Machiasport, Maine), who led the way with 15 assists for Mount Ida. The Mustangs would tie the tight first set at 23 with a three-point run, but Eliza Bowes (W. Yarmouth, Mass.) and Ronaghan slammed the final two points to put the set away.

The end of the second set was a similar affair, with the hosts scoring four straight points to cut a 24-18 deficit to just two. Molly Alkinburg (Port Deposit, Md.) had a kill, and Reidy had two straight points, but Olivia Wallett (Willington, Conn.) slammed the door for the Corsairs.

Wallett and Alkinburg each had four kills for their respective teams.

In the third set, Mount Ida held a lead early on, grabbing a 7-4 advantage thanks to back to back aces by Reidy. Ronaghan put together two straight kills and a service ace by Eliza Bowes put the Corsairs up for good, as UMass Dartmouth used a 5-0 run to pull away down the stretch.

Junior Alysha Dunbar (Quincy, Mass.) pitched in 11 assists and nine digs in the effort for Mount Ida, and freshman Kristy Walton (Fairhaven, Mass.) added eight kills.

Reidy (10) and Kelcey Koolman (Bedford, N.H.) (12) each had double-digits in digs, and each turned in three service aces.

Bowes and Kayla Kirby (Westport, Mass.) had six kills apiece in the win for UMass Dartmouth, while sophomore Christina Spinazola (Medway, Mass.) had 16 assists and seven digs.

Senior Brianna Perry (Acushnet, Mass.) led all players with 15 digs in a defensive effort for the visitors.

Mount Ida hits the road again this weekend, travelling to Wentworth on Saturday for an 11:00 AM game against the Leopards, followed by a 1:00 pm neutral site contest vs WPI.

The Corsairs travel to Mount Holyoke College on Saturday afternoon for a tri-match featuring the Lyons and Anna Maria College.
