Mustangs Go to Five with Albertus Magnus, Fall to Hosts at Emmanuel Tri-Match

BOSTON, Mass. – Mount Ida won the third and fourth sets against Albertus Magnus to force a fifth game, but fell 3-2 to the Falcons and then dropped a 3-0 decision to host Emmanuel at a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's volleyball tri-match on Saturday afternoon.   

Albertus Magnus 3, Mount Ida 2

 Albertus Magnus outlasted Mount Ida College, 3-2 (25-21, 25-17, 27-29, 13-26, 15-9). 

For the Mustangs, freshman outside hitter Alysha Dunbar (Quincy, Mass.) registered a team-best 10 kills while junior setter Nicole Peixoto (New Bedford, Mass.) dished out a match-high 32 assists. Sophomore libero Kelcey Koolman (Bedford, N.H.) added 24 digs in the effort. 

Freshman Katelyn Wickert (Chesapeake, Va.) also had a strong game, with 9 kills, while Koolman pitched in with six kills of her own. 

The Mustangs served 13 aces, including four apiece from Wickert and Dunbar, and three from Peixoto. Wickert and Abbey Fedigan (New Fairfield, Conn.) were also in on two blocks apiece. 

Senior outside hitter Melissa Manning (Milford, Conn.) posted a double-double, recording a match-high 14 kills to go along with 18 digs. Sophomore defensive specialist Ramona Onofrio (East Haven, Conn.) was stellar defensively with 25 digs while senior setter Lily Dy (Torrington, Conn.) chipped in with 25 assists. 

Emmanuel 3, Mount Ida 0 

The Saints completed their own sweep of the tri-match with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-11, 25-13) win over the Mustangs. Emmanuel also used a strong service game in which they notched 15 aces in the win to improve to 4-0 in the GNAC. 

For the Mustangs, senior outside hitter Emily Hutvagner (Beacons Falls, Conn.) paced their offense with six kills while freshman setter Chevona Markel (Torrington, Conn.) dished out 11 assists. 

In the opening set, the action was back and forth until the midway point where the Saints took control. With the score locked at 13-13, Emmanuel rolled off three consecutive points behind the service of junior Christine Durkee (Salem, Conn.) to push ahead 16-13. The Mustangs would record a point to make it 16-14 but then Cara Callahan (Medway, Mass.) served the Saints to the win, reeling off the final nine points of the frame for the 25-14 win. 

Emmanuel put the visitors away early in set two, jumping out to an 8-1 lead behind Durkee's service game. The Saints led by as many as 15 in the frame  (20-5) but Mount Ida was able to fight for some points late in the action including a kill from Kellie Schroeder (North Grafton, Mass.), but Emmanuel held on for the 25-11 win. 

Schroeder had five kills in the match, while freshman Lucianna Medici (Riverside, R.I.) led the team with nine digs. 

The Saints closed the door on the Mustangs in the third set by hitting an efficient .364 clip from the floor en route to the 25-13 win. Durkee served up a pair of aces in the final series including the match-point to seal the victory. 

Mount Ida returns to action a week from today when they travel to St. Joseph (Conn.) for a single GNAC match.
