Tuesday, October 23, 2012 - Mount Ida College first year middle hitter Trudy Goetchius (North Andover, MA/Lawrence Vocational Tech.) had her best individual performance of the season recording 20 kills on 37 attempts with 10 defensive digs in a 3-1 non-league victory over hosting Newbury College Tuesday evening. Mount Ida improves to an overall record of 11-14.
The visitors took an early lead, claiming the first set with ease, 25-15 behind Goetchius, who was nearly perfect from the floor tallying five kills on seven attempts with zero errors. However the Nighthawks were not going to be denied and clawed their way back.
The offensive duo of junior outside hitter Jessy Touron (Brockton, MA) and sophomore middle hitterSydney Fish (Kalamazoo, MI) proved to be too much for the Mustangs to handle in the second set. Touron and Fish were perfect from the floor, combining to register eight kills on 18 attempts for a combined attack percentage of .444, to edge out Mount Ida, 25-23 and tie up the match.
After the Nighthawks took the second game of the match, it appeared as if momentum winds were changing directions as Newbury built a quick 7-3 lead early on behind sophomore right side hitter Lauren Watson(Denver, CO) but Mount Ida was resilient. Junior middle hitter Abbey Fedigan (New Fairfield, CT/New Fairfield) capped off a 5-1 run, midway through the set, with one of her four kills of the set to take an 11-10 lead and they did not turn around.
Late in the set, the Nighthawks tried to claw their way back as first year middle hitter Taylor Doolittle (Barneveld, NY) served a perfectly placed ball that landed just inside the back-line for an ace to cut the deficit to 23-20. It was a little too late as the Mustangs held on to take the third game, 25-22, before taking the fourth set by a score of 25-18.
Fish led the way for the Nighthawks hitting .296 on the evening with a team-high 11 kills on 27 attempts and two block assists. Touron was right behind her, coming two kills away from her third double-double of the season, recording a match-high 16 defensive digs to go along with eight kills on the night.
The Mustangs host non-league foe Babson College Thursday evening with game time slated for 6:00 p.m.
