Saturday, October 13, 2012 (Newton, Massachusetts) - Behind a 16 kill performance from senior hitter Jennifer Ferreira (Shirley, MA/Ayer) the Mount Ida College women's volleyball team captured a 3-1 non-conference victory over visiting Regis College by scores of 25-18, 25-21, 24-26 and 25-17 in the first game of Saturday's tri-match. Mount Ida women's volleyball hosted Dig Pink Day to raise breast cancer awareness.
Along with a solid individual performance from Ferreira, Mount Ida sophomore hitter's Emily Hutvagner (Beacon Falls, CT/Woodland Regional) and Shay Collins (Londonderry, NH/Londonderry) combined for 15 kills with Hutvagner notching 20 digs. Mustang senior libero Toni Vegiard (South Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) was solid defensively recording a team-high 28 digs. Sophomore setter Nicole Peixoto (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford) dished out a game-high 35 assists.
For the Pride, sophomore middle hitter Jackie Silver (West Hills, CA/El Camino Real) led Regis offensively with eight kills while junior hitter Vanessa Noesi (Methuen, MA/Greater Lawrence Tech.) tallied seven kills on 25 attempts with only one error. Junior libero Sara Gold (North Hollywood, CA/Notre Dame) was outstanding defensively with 41 digs while sophomore setter Marilia Ramos (Fort Lauderdale, FL/Boyd Anderson) added 20 helpers.
In match two the visiting teams met with Regis College taking down visiting Curry College in a 3-0 sweep by scores of 25-15, 25-21 and 25-23 sending the Pride home at 1-1 for the day with an overall record of 8-16.
For Regis, Noesi added 12 kills on 27 attempts with only two errors adding three solo blocks as well. Sophomore hitter Samantha Bliss (Framingham, MA/Framingham) tallied nine kills on 22 attempts with five digs while Ramos ran the offense again for the Pride with 24 assists and 16 digs respectively. Gold would lead Regis defensively with a game-high 24 digs respectively.
The Colonels saw freshman middle hitter Brittany Lynch (Randolph, MA/Blue Hills Regional) record a team-high seven kills on 27 attempts with a block assist. Junior libero Tyla Miller (Marshfield, MA/Marshfield) chipped in 17 digs while sophomore setter Hannah Robison (Cumberland, RI/Cumberland) dished out 12 assists adding a service ace as well.
Mount Ida finished off their day flawless with a 3-0 sweep victory over visiting Curry College in non-conference action by scores of 25-14, 25-16 and 25-17 improving their overall record to 9-12 holding at 4-3 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC). The Colonels fell for the second time heading home at 7-12, winless for the afternoon.
The Mustangs were again led by Ferreira offensively with 10 kills on 25 attempts along with three service aces. Collins and freshman hitter Trudy Goetchius (North Andover, MA/Lawrence Vocational Tech.) notched seven kills apiece while senior setter Julie Smith dished out 22 assists and two service aces.
Curry saw four kills each from senior hitter Kendra LeMay (Chicopee, MA/Holyoke Catholic) and sophomore Tiana Sturtze (Worcester, MA/Doherty). Sturtze would also add five block assists and a solo block. Robison dished out another 10 assists long with two service aces and five digs.
The Mustangs, who have now won seven out of nine contests, head back into conference play at Norwich University Monday evening in Northfield, Vermont with game time slated for 7:00 p.m. Curry hosts Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opponent Western New England University Wednesday evening at 6:00 p.m. and Regis College will head to New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) opponent Becker College Wednesday as well starting at 7:00 p.m.
