WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL SNAPS LOSING STREAK WITH 3-0 SWEEP

Thursday, September 27, 2012 (Newton, Massachusetts) - Senior hitter Jennifer Ferreira (Shirley, MA/Ayer) led the Mount Ida College women's volleyball team with a game-high 14 kills on 32 attempts with only two errors en route to a 3-0 sweep over visiting non-league opponent Lesley University by scores of 25-11, 25-12 and 25-16 at the Athletic Center Thursday evening. 

The Mustangs register their third victory of the season improving to an overall record of 3-10 holding a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) slate of 1-2.  The visitors fall to 2-9 for the 2012 season and have yet to compete in a New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) contest.

Mount Ida left no doubt capturing three straight wins to snatch the victory with very solid play and minimal errors offensively.   Along with a solid performance from Ferreira, Mustang freshman middle hitter Trudy Goetchius (North Andover, MA/Lawrence Vocational Tech.) added 10 kills on 22 attempts adding a team-high 10 digs defensively.  Senior setter Julie Smith (Richmond, RI/Chariho) dished out a game-high 27 assists also adding four digs.  Junior Abbey Fedigan (New Fairfield, CT/New Fairfield) added two solo blocks and a block assist respectively.

The Lynx were led by sophomore's Alyson Finbow (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) and Danielle Johnson (Waterford, CT/Waterford) with seven kills each.  Lesley senior Megan Ortwein (Easton, PA/Shanghai American School) tallied 10 digs while senior Kaitlyn Miller (Leesport, PA/Schuylkill Valley) notched a game-high 11 digs.  Freshman setter Donna Niosi (Quincy, MA/Quincy) recorded 17 assists as well to aid in the offensive attack of the visitors.

Mount Ida will host their first GNAC tri-match of the season this Sunday on homecoming weekend against visiting Anna Maria College and Albertus Magnus College with match one slated for 10:00 a.m. at the Athletic Center.  The visitors will travel to their first league competition of the season this Saturday against hosting Elms College starting at 1:00 p.m.
