Tuesday, September 4, 2012 (Newton, Massachusetts) - The Mount Ida College women's volleyball team dropped their second straight loss to open the 2012 season in their home opener against visiting non-conference foe Framingham State University Tuesday evening falling 3-1 by scores of 11-25, 25-15, 18-25 and 21-25 at Mount Ida Athletic Center. The Mustangs slump to an overall record of 0-2 while the visiting Rams stay undefeated at 4-0. Neither school has yet to play in league action.
After a winning bid in game one by Framingham State (25-11), the Mustangs came roaring back in game two winning 25-15 building a lot of momentum. After a tight game three with the Rams just edging the hosts (25-18), they held off a surging Mount Ida squad in game four to close out the 3-1 match victory.
Mount Ida was led by senior hitter Jennifer Ferreira (Shirley, MA/Ayer) with eight kills on 32 attempts also adding 12 digs. Freshman middle blocker Trudy Goetchius (North Andover, MA/Lawrence Vocational) added 10 kills and a solo block while freshman defensive specialist Kelcey Koolman (Bedford, NH/Bedford) notched a team-high 19 digs. Senior Julie Smith (Richmond, RI/Chariho) and sophomore Nicole Peixoto (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford) split time at the setting position collecting 10 assists a piece.
The visitors were led by sophomore middle hitter Ashley Nee (Hanson, MA/Sacred Heart) with a game high 20 kills adding 12 digs and a solo block as well. Junior hitter Taryn McCarthy (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) chipped in 13 kills and 12 digs respectively. Sophomore setter Morgan Drew (North Easton, MA/Oliver Ames) added a game-high 21 assists as well.
Mount Ida will travel to non-league Clark University this coming Thursday in Worcester, Massachusetts with game time slated for 7:00 p.m. The visitors are back in action this weekend at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth tournament.
