The Mount Ida College women's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 non-conference loss to visiting Newbury College Monday evening by scores of 25-21, 17-25, 25-20, and 27-25 in Newton, Massachusetts. The Mustangs, who come off a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tri-match split (1-1) from over the weekend, fall to 7-7 overall and remain at 2-2 in league play while the visitors improve to 8-11 for 2011.
The Mustangs were led offensively by senior captain Rachelle Gilbert (Corunna, IN/Dekalb) with seven kills adding 32 digs and four service aces. Junior hitter Jennifer Ferreira (Shirley, MA/Ayer) also chipped in seven kills also adding 14 digs. Freshman setter Nicole Peixoto (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford) dished out 12 assists. Junior libero Toni Vegiard (South Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) added 41 digs.
The visitors were led by sophomore Jessy Touron (Brockton, MA/Brockton) with seven kills also adding three service aces. Nighthawks' junior setter Tegina Sibilia (Agawam, MA/Agawam) dished out 11 assists for the contest while junior Sarah Hanna (Center Moriches, NY/East Port-South Manor) added 13 digs.
The Mustangs will travel to non-conference Lesley University Thursday evening with game time slated for 7:30 p.m. while the Nighthawks visit non-league Suffolk University on that same day starting at 7:00 p.m.
