Thursday, September 22, 2011(Newton, Massachusetts) - The Mount Ida College women's volleyball team captured a 3-0 sweep of visiting non-conference Curry College Thursday afternoon in Newton, Massachusetts by scores of 25-12, 25-16, and 25-25-8. The Mustangs improve to 6-5 overall for 2011 and remain at 1-1 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) standings. The visiting Colonels fall to 2-6 for the year and hold at a winless 0-2 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play.
The Mustangs were led by senior captain Rachelle Gilbert (Corunna, IN/Dekalb) with 13 kills on 24 attempts with only one error while record 23 digs in the process. Junior outside hitter Jennifer Ferreira (Shirley, MA/Ayer) added eight kills along with four digs.
Freshman setter Nicole Peixoto (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford) dished out 14 assists for the game while senior captain Cody Fusco (San Francisco, CA/San Francisco Waldorf) added nine assists, three kills, and four service aces. Freshman libero Lauren Rushalski (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) chipped in 18 digs for second best for the team.
The bright spot for the visitors was freshman Courtney DiBiasio (Coventry, RI/Coventry) powering the offense with eight kills. Junior Kaitlyn Poirier (Acushnet, MA/New Bedford) dished out six assists. The visitors had trouble rallying with multiple errors that cost them throughout the match.
The Mustangs will travel to St. Joseph College (CT) for their second GNAC tri-match of the season this Saturday against the Blue Jays and visiting Pine Manor College with game time slated for 12:00 noon.
