WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL GOES 3-1 IN UMD INVITATIONAL

The Mount Ida College women's volleyball team competed in the UMASS-Dartmouth Invitational this past weekend going 3-1 through Friday and Saturday competition. 

The Mustangs dropped their first match of the tournament against visiting Framingham State University falling 3-1 by scores of 19-25, 25-15, 22-25, and 15-25 Friday.  Mount Ida was led statistically by senior captain Rachelle Gilbert (Corunna, IN/Dekalb) tallying 16 kills and 14 digs.  Junior outside hitter Jennifer Ferreira (Shirley, MA/Ayer) added 10 kills on 21 attempts with only two errors good for a .381 hitter percentage.  Senior captain and setter Cody Fusco (San Francisco, CA/San Francisco Waldorf) dished out 14 assists chipping in seven digs in the process.  Freshman setter Nicole Peixoto (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford) added 15 assists as well.

Mount Ida captured their next match against visiting Eastern Nazarene College in four games winning 3-1 by scores of 25-21, 24-26, 25-23, and 25-21 to finish day one of the tournament at 1-1.  In the victory the Mustangs were led by Ferreira would had a game high 17 kills with only one error on 32 attempts for an impressive .500 hitting percentage.  Gilbert was also impressive with 13 kills on 36 attempts also adding 14 digs.  Fusco led Mount Ida with 21 assists while junior libero Toni Vegiard (South Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) had a game high 23 digs.

Day two of the tournament was an impressive one for the Mustangs going 2-0 on Saturday.  In game one, the Mustangs faced visiting non-conference foe Salem State College winning 3-0 by scores of 25-12, 25-18, and 25-9.  Ferreira led Mount Ida again offensively with nine kills on 19 attempts and only one error.  Freshman defensive specialist Lauren Rushalski (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) added 20 digs as well.

The Mustangs faced SUNY-Cobleskill in the final match of the weekend capturing a 3-0 sweep by scores of 25-17, 25-21, and 25-10 on Saturday afternoon.  Ferreira was again the top offensive threat for Mount Ida adding nine kills on 17 attempts.  Fusco dished out 12 assists on the day while Vegiard added 18 digs. 

Rachelle Gilbert was selected to the UMASS-Dartmouth Invitational All-Tournament team for her outstanding performance over the weekend.  In four matches played, Gilbert recorded 60 kills and 64 digs. 

The Mustangs will travel to non-conference Wheaton College this coming Wednesday with game time slated for 7:00 p.m.
