Thursday, September 1, 2011(Newton, Massachusetts) - The Mount Ida College women's volleyball team fell behind early to visiting non-conference Clark University down 2-1 in the match Thursday evening in Newton, Massachusetts. But the Mustangs, behind solid play all around, came back in the final two games to capture a 3-2 nail biting victory over the Cougars in dramatic fashion with a dominating fifth game performance. The Mustangs improve to 1-0 overall while the visiting fall to 0-1 on the season. Neither team has yet to play a conference match.
The Mustangs were led by senior captain Rachelle Gilbert (Corunna, IN/Dekalb) with 14 kills also adding an impressive five service aces three consecutively in game four alone. Sophomore newcomer Abbey Fedigan (New Fairfield, CT/New Fairfield) gelled nicely with two solo blocks and two digs. Junior Jennifer Ferreira (Shirley, MA/Ayer) also chipped in an impressive performance with eight digs.
Visiting Clark was led offensively by senior outside hitter Amira Tranchell (Falmouth, MA/Falmouth) notching 14 kills while freshman middle blocker Savonnah Rowe (New York, NY/Ethical Culture Fieldston School) added four solo blocks. Senior libero Kortney Kelley (Barnstable, MA/Barnstable) chipped in 17 digs for a game high number.
The Mustangs will stay home and host non-conference UMASS-Dartmouth Saturday afternoon with game time slated for 1:00 p.m.
