The Mount Ida College women's volleyball team swept their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tri-match of the season with 3-0 victories over hosting Norwich University by scores of 25-21, 25-16, 2 and 25-15 and over visiting St. Joseph College (CT) by scores of 25-4, 25-5, and 25-11. The Mustangs improve to an overall record of 14-5 and pull into sixth place in the GNAC standings with a conference record of 3-2.
The Mustangs dominated the competition in the first match over the Blue Jays winning by scores of 25-4, 25-5, and 25-11. Mount Ida sophomore middle blocker Christine Gallart (Germantown, MD/St. John's College HS) led her squad with 11 kills on 18 attempts with only two errors and a hitting percentage of .500. Mustang senior captain Chelsea Darnell (Dublin, OH/Dublin Scioto) notched seven kills with zero errors on 14 attempts also adding five digs while fellow senior captain Kira Feeter (Keene, NH/Keene) dished out a team high 14 assists with a service ace.
In the final game of the day's GNAC tri-match, the Mustangs trounced hosting Norwich University winning 3-0 by scores of 25-21, 25-16, and 25-15. The Mustangs were led offensively by Darnell with 13 kills on 29 attempts also adding 10 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Jennifer Ferreira (Shirley, MA/Ayer) chipped in 10 kills on 23 attempts with only one error adding three service aces. Sophomore libero Michelle Begley (West Barnstable, MA/West Barnstable) added 10 digs as well.
The Mustangs will have most of the week off and continue action this coming Saturday with another GNAC tri-match hosted by Simmons College along with visiting Albertus Magnus College starting at 1:00 p.m.
