The Mount Ida College women's volleyball team hosted their first tri-match of the season against visiting Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) foe Emmanuel College and non-conference Newbury College Saturday afternoon in Newton, Massachusetts. It was a sweet day for the Mustangs sweeping both matches beating the Saints 3-2 in dramatic fashion by scores of 17-25, 21-25, 25-23, 25-17, and 15-9 for their first GNAC win of 2010. Mount Ida went on to handle the Nighthawks quickly winning 3-0 by scores of 25-14, 25-8, 25-21. Emmanuel faced Newbury in the second match of three on the day winning easily 3-0 by scores of 25-15, 25-9, 25-18. The Mustangs improve to 7-3 overall and a perfect 1-0 in conference competition.
In match one the Mustangs went down 2-0 to a surging Emmanuel in the opening only to come stampeding back winning the next three consecutive games for the 3-2 victory. The Mustangs saw a couple of outstanding individual performances in this match with sophomore hitter Jennifer Ferreira (Shirley, MA/Ayer) hammering an amazing 19 kills on 44 attempts with no errors also chipping in eight digs. Sophomore Devyn Frank (Mystic, CT/Fitch) also turned in an unreal performance statistically with 10 kills on 15 attempts also without an error adding two solo blocks and two block assists. Sophomore libero Alexa Piekarski (Rye, NH/Portsmouth) tallied a team high 12 digs as well. Senior captain Kira Feeter (Keene, NH/Keene) and junior setter Cody Fusco (San Francisco, CA/San Francisco Waldorf) enjoyed a solid overall day as well combining for 41 assists.
In match two for the Mustangs they would play host to Newbury College winning handily 3-0 with another magnificent performance from a handful of Mustangs statistically. Ferriera, who made one hitting error in eight games played on 63 hitting attempts, added eight kills with one error on 19 attempts. Sophomore middle blocker Christine Gallart (Germantown, MD/St. John's College HS) also added eight kills with two errors on 20 attempts and two solo blocks. Frank led the Mustangs with another amazing performance topping her team with nine kills without an error in 29 attempts. Junior transfer Anna Cesary (Walpole, MA/Walpole) has been a solid addition to the program adding four kills with a dig. Feeter dished out a team high 17 assists with five digs.
The Mustangs will travel to non-conference Regis College (MA) this coming Tuesday night in Weston, Massachusetts starting at 7:00 p.m.
