The Mount Ida women's volleyball team defeated Newbury College this past Tuesday night in Brookline, Massachusetts in three straight sets by a score of 3-0. The Mustangs dominated the Nighthawks from the start and swept all three games by scores of 25-14, 25-18 and 25-21. The Mustangs improve to 3-4 overall and will head home to host non-conference Clark University this Thursday starting at 6:00 p.m.
In game one of the match, Mount Ida set the tone from the start blowing open the game 9-1 before Newbury would settle down. The Nighthawks put together a string of points but it was not enough to slow down the Mustangs offense as they would go on a run to end the game 25-14. Mount Ida was lead by Lauren Biondo (Coventry, RI/Coventry) who recorded three kills in the game.
In the second game, the Mustangs' Chelsea Darnell (Dublin, OH/Dublin Scioto) would begin to heat up, recording three kills and five digs in the game. Adding support to her teammate Amanda Pereira (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford) also had three kills and four digs helping to drive the Mustangs to a 25-18 finish.
Game three would bring some life from the Nighthawks as they would go on to take the lead for the first time in the match 10-8 but the Mustangs Darnell would respond back with five kills and two digs to reclaim the lead. The Nighthawks went on to put up a fight but in the end the Mustangs proved to be too much ending the game 25-22. Sophomore Rachelle Gilbert (Corunna, IN/Dekalb) was the equalizer for the night with nine kills on only one error.
Despite the loss, the Nighthawks' first year Libero Jesse Urrey (Cobleskill, NY/Cobleskill-Richmondville) showed signs of light recording 26 digs in the match, while fellow first year Sarah Young (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) recorded three kills and eight digs of her own.
