The Mount Ida College women's volleyball team dropped their third Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match Monday night against Rivier College 3-0 in straight sets by scores of 25-22, 25-20, and 25-16 in Newton, Massachusetts. The Mustangs drop their overall record to 12-10, 4-3 in the GNAC while the Raiders improve to 13-10, 4-1 in conference play.
Game one was very close the entire way with both teams exchanging points for the bulk of competition. The Raiders slowly pulled away towards the finish leading 19-15 and eventually taking the 25-21 victory for the 1-0 match advantage.
The visitors had the early lead up 13-9 on a kill by senior Nicole Hersey (Milton, NH). But the hosts would inch closer on back-to-back points by junior Lauren Biondo (Coventry, RI/Coventry) off a block and a kill making it 13-11. It would lock at 15-15 and 16-16 capped off on a double hit call on the Raiders. Eventually Rivier would pull away off key hitting errors by the Mustangs giving the visitors the 25-20 victory and the 2-0 match lead.
The Raiders would power game three with no answer from Mount Ida. They led 10-4 early on and never looked back taking the outright 25-16 win for the 2-0 match sweep.
The Mustangs were led by senior captain Blair Canan (North Reading, MA/North Reading) who tallied eight kills on 16 attempts. Biondo and sophomore Cherie Parisi (North Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) combined for 13 kills and a block a piece. Sophomore Kira Feeter (Keene, NH/Keene) notched 19 assists while senior Stephanie Saito (West Linn, OR/West Linn) tallied 12 digs.
Mount Ida will head to downtown Boston at Emmanuel College for their third tri-match of the season with Emmanuel and Pine Manor College starting at 1:00 p.m.
