The Mount Ida College Women’s Volleyball team started
their season with a bang going 5-0 in the Regis College Tournament
taking a first place trophy home knocking off New England
Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC)
powerhouse Wheaton College for the title this past weekend. This
should give them the confidence they need going into a new
conference (GNAC) with different competition.
The Mustangs only lost one game in three matches against Regis
College, WPI, and Mass. College of Liberal Arts. They racked up 83
kills in three games and 171 in the tournament. This was without
the services of junior captain Stephaine Saito (West
Linn, OR/West Linn) who was not present due to a
family engagement.
After disposing of Worcester State in the semifinal match, it was
on to Wheaton where it went down to the final game. Wheaton closed
the gap quickly going up two games to none by scores of, 32-30 and
30-20. But MIC would not be denied winning the next three
consecutive games (30-25, 30-28, 15-9) for the victory and the
tournament trophy. They were perfect in their attack with a
percentage of 1.000 in the last two games.
Sophomore libero Megan Svendsen (Sebastopol,
CA/Analy) received All-Tournament team honors with
147 digs throughout the tournament with her impeccable defensive.
Freshman setter Kira Feeter (Keene,
NH/Keene) gathered the tournament’s Most
Valuable Player award with 140 assists and eight service aces.
The Mustangs will replay Worcester Polytech on Wednesday, September
5 at home.
