Wednesday, March 27, 2013 (New Haven, Connecticut) - To open Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action, The Mount Ida College softball team dropped their first twin bill of the season against hosting Albertus Magnus College falling in game one 4-1 and again in the night cap 6-2 Wednesday afternoon in New Haven, Connecticut. The Mustangs, who came back from their annual spring break trip with a 3-4 slate, bow to an overall record of 3-6 still searching for their first conference win (0-2).
Albertus scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning before adding two more runs in the sixth to extend its lead to 4-0. In the first, Brittney Urciuoli (Newington, CT) led off the contest with a walk before stealing second to get into scoring position. A sacrifice bunt by Krista LaBissoniere (Meriden, CT) moved Urciuoli to third before a Maio single up the middle plated the Falcons' first run of the game.
A ball through the legs of the Mount Ida third basemen allowed Maio to score later in the inning to give the Falcons a 2-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the sixth, Isabel Lopez (West Haven, CT) scored on a wild pitch before an RBI single up the middle by freshman Alyssa Puccilli (Milford, CT) scored Danielle Figueroa (Bridgeport, CT) from third.
Mount Ida scored its lone run in the top of the seventh as an error by the Albertus outfield allowed senior Chaise Courborn (Monroe, CT/Masuk) to score from first base.
Jackie Medina (Bridgeport, CT) allowed four hits and struck out six in the contest as she earned the win. Mount Ida freshman hurler Allie Norris (Plymouth, MA/Plymouth South) took her first loss of the year allowing eight hits, three earned runs and three walks.
In the final game of the afternoon's double dip led by four hits in the frame, including a bases clearing triple by Melissa Manning (Milford, CT), the Falcons scored five runs in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead.
Mount Ida tallied its two runs on a round tripper by junior utility player Kristen Guerrero (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Ludlowe), her second of the season in the top of the sixth inning. Her homer cut the Falcons' lead to 5-2 before Albertus added a run in the bottom of the frame. The Falcons added their sixth and final run thanks to a Mount Ida error.
Jackie Medina (Bridgeport, CT) earned the win as she allowed five hits in seven innings of work. Mount Ida senior ace Devan Meeker (Bantam, CT/Litchfield) gave up 11 hits and six runs in the loss.
The Mustangs were led by Guerrero in the final game with two hits and two RBI.
Brittney Urciuoli (Newington, CT) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored for the Falcons, while both Jamie Vesciglio (Stratford, CT) and Danielle Figueroa (Bridgeport, CT) added two hits apiece.
Mount Ida softball travels to neighboring league rival Lasell College this Friday afternoon starting at 3:00 p.m. and will host their first home contests of the season against visiting Simmons College this Saturday afternoon with game one of the twin bill coming at 12:00 noon.
