NEWTON, Mass. -- Freshman Charles Hacking (Canterbury, N.H.) scored five goals, including three tallies during a decisive third quarter run, to lead New England College to a 12-9 non-league college men’s lacrosse victory over Mount Ida Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The visiting Pilgrims (1-4) rallied from a 5-2 second quarter deficit to even matters at 5-5 at the break on freshman Patrick Storie’s (Williamstown, Mass.) goal with 1:08 remaining in the half, and New England College took the lead for good on junior Zach Cotoni’s (Groton, Mass.) man-up marker 4:47 after intermission. Hacking’s natural hat trick capped a seven-goal run for the visitors that extended their edge to 9-5 heading into the final frame, but the host Mustangs (0-4) stormed back with three unanswered tallies in the opening 9:42 of the fourth quarter to close back to within one (9-8) on sophomore Dakari Eason’s (Norwalk, Conn.) goal with 5:18 remaining. The Pilgrims iced their triumph with three unanswered scores of their own in just 71 seconds of action to regain their four goal lead on freshman Reilly Parker’s (Pittsfield, Mass.) marker with 3:26 to go, as junior Kyle Ton’s (Norwich, Conn.) man-up goal with 1:34 remaining sliced Mount Ida’s deficit to three and accounted for the final margin.
Senior Matt Richard (Weare, N.H.) added two goals and an assist in the win for New England College, which received a marker and four assists from Parker along with a tally and two helpers from Cotoni. Juniors Austin Frankel (Peabody, Mass.) and Connor Fries (Barnstable, Mass.) added single goals on the day for the Pilgrims, who received an assist off the stick of senior Tom Zervos (Montreal, Que.).
Ton tallied five goals and an assist to finish with six points in the setback for Mount Ida, which received a pair of tallies from junior Owen LaPorte (Farmington, Conn.) to go with a single marker from junior Jacob Gordon (Niantic, Conn.). Senior Marcus Donahue (Braintree, Mass.) and junior Eric Walker (Newington, Conn.) collected two assists each for the Mustangs, who received single helpers off the sticks of sophomore Patrick Webb (Westwood, Mass.) and freshman Mike Alibrandi (Holliston, Mass.).
Junior William Platt (San Francisco, Calif.) picked up the win in goal for New England College with a 12-save effort, while senior Cam Hayward (Derry, N.H.) made 12 stops in 58-plus minutes of play in the setback for Mount Ida. Sophomore Joe Varagnolo (Centereach, N.Y.) posted a pair of saves as well for the hosts, as the Pilgrims outshot the Mustangs by a 42-31 margin overall (26-21 on goal) and held a 14-11 edge in face-offs for the contest.
Mount Ida hosts Gordon in a non-league outing on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field beginning at 3:30 p.m., while New England College heads to Providence, R.I. on Wednesday evening to take on Johnson & Wales in a non-league clash that begins at 6:00 p.m.
