Mustangs Race by Falcons, Take GNAC Tilt, 21-13

NEW HAVEN, Mass. -- The Mount Ida College men's lacrosse team improved to 4-4 (4-1 GNAC) yesterday afternoon when they surged past Albertus Magnus by a final score of 21-13. With the loss, the Falcons drop to 1-8 (0-4).

The Mustagngs were led offensively by Austin Phillips (Haverhill, Mass.) who recored a natural hat trick in the game on 8 shots, seven of them on goal. Wyatt Sullivan (Arlington, Mass.) also recorded a hat trick and then padded on another goal to finish with four in the game to go along with one assist.

Mount Ida outscored the Falcons 10-2 in the opening quarter as Sullivan scored three of his four total goals on the afternoon.  Sullivan finished the contest with four goals and one assist to lead the Mustangs.

At the halftime break, the Mustangs led 17-3 and outshot the Falcons 38-12 in the half, including a 24-4 showing in the first quarter.

Albertus' goals in the first half came from Greg Buck (Berlin, Conn.) and Justin Bennet (Fairfield, Conn.) as Buck registered two of his five goals in the opening half.

Buck also opened the second half with a goal to make the score 17-4 as he finished off of a pass from Mike Choiniere (Bethany, Conn.). Dalton Sargent (Augusta, Maine), Paul Mirmina (Milford, Conn.) and Buck each scored in the third quarter as Albertus outscored the Mustangs 4-1 in the third.

The Falcons cut the Mount Ida lead to ten at 20-10 in the fourth quarter and scored four of the last five goals of the game.

The Mustangs outshot Albertus 57-43 on the afternoon, while the Falcons outshot the Mustangs 31-19 in the second half of play.

Cam Heyward (Derry, N.H.) saw the first thirty minutes of action in between the pipes for the Mustangs and came away with the win. Tyler McElreath (Upton, Mass.) finished the last thirty minutes in goal for Mount Ida making six saves and allowing ten goals. Albertus' Jack Kerner (Merrick, N.Y.) made 18 saves in the GNAC contest.

The Mustangs return to action on Monday afternoon when they host Becker College in a makeup game from earlier in the season; game time is set for 4:00 p.m. Albertus returns to GNAC action on Wednesday when the Falcons host Johnson & Wales (R.I.) at 3:00 p.m.
