Emmanuel Deals Mustangs Second GNAC Loss of the Season

Emmanuel Deals Mustangs Second GNAC Loss of the Season

BOSTON, Mass. – Mount Ida was held scoreless after the first quarter of their Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's lacrosse game on Friday night at Emmanuel College and suffered a 13-1 defeat to the Saints at Roberto Clemente Field.

For the Mustangs, the GNAC loss was their second in the last three conference affairs, and they fall to 7-5 (4-2 GNAC), while the Saints stay perfect in the conference (6-0) and move to 8-3 overall.

Freshman Ryan Trinque (East Greenwich, R.I.) scored the lone goal for Mount Ida with 1:09 to play in the first period, but by that point the host Saints were already ahead 4-0. Emmanuel scored five more times before halftime, including a second period hat-trick by sophomore attack Kaile MacLean-Daley (Moretown, Vt.).

Senior Kyle Cordaro (Worcester, Mass.) made 19 stops in the loss for Mount Ida, who has off until next Wednesday night when they host Saint Joseph's (Maine) at Alumni Field at 6:30.

Mount Ida was outshot 48-23 and saw the Saints grab a 40-13 advantage in ground balls and a 14-2 margin in faceoff victories, highlighted by Emmanuel junior middie Jake Pickett (Stratham, N.H.) winning 12 of 14 faces and collecting six groundballs.

EC got things started early as sophomore middie Chris Curtis (Ashland, Mass.) netted his 16th goal of the year to give the hosts a 1-0 lead with 10:21 remaining in the opening frame. Senior attack Brian O'Regan (Milton, Mass.) made it 2-0 with under five minutes to play in the quarter before sophomore middie Justin Kelly (Collegeville, Pa.) made it 3-0 with a goal just 20 seconds later. With 2:45 left in the first, sophomore middie Michael Rogers (New Haven, Conn.) extended the lead to 4-0 with his team-leading 20th goal of the year.

The Mustangs got on the board late in the first when Trinque found the back of the net for his seventh score of the year to cut the lead to 4-1 heading into the second quarter. Unfortunately, that was the only goal Mount Ida could find, marking the first time since April 8, 2002 that a Mount Ida men's lacrosse team only scored one goal in a match.

Kelly made it 5-1 for the hosts with his second goal of the night early in the second quarter before MacLean-Daley scored back-to-back markers to give EC a 7-1 advantage. The Saints closed the half strong as Curtis and MacLean-Daley each scored again over the final 80 seconds of play to make it a 9-1 Emmanuel lead heading into the break.

Freshman middie Tony Cibelli (Westboro, Mass.) got into the mix with his 12th goal of the year to open the second half scoring, making it 10-1. Junior attack Jake Jaskolski (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) also got into the scoring column in the third quarter to make it 11-1 with his third goal of the year, beating Cordaro stick-side high. With 44 tics left in the third, junior attack Evan Dolber (Malden, Mass.) scored his 10th goal of the year to push the lead to 12-1.

Junior attack Ryan Sabuda (Indianapolis, Ind.) capped the scoring with an unassisted marker with 9:37 to play to account for the 13-1 final.

The Emmanuel defensive unit held the Mustangs scoreless for the final 46 minutes of action and junior goalie Austin Lauzier (Bedford, N.H.) stopped nine of 10 shots while junior goalie Justin Byers (Indianapolis, Ind.) made four stops to close out the victory.

Freshman Jon Berry (Chichester, N.H.) caused a pair of turnovers and picked up two ground balls for Mount Ida.

This was the first win for Emmanuel over the Mustangs, and their eighth straight victory on the season.  The Saints are back in action Wednesday night as well, when they host Norwich at 7:00 pm.
