MEN'S LAX CLOSES 2012 WITH NCAA FIRST ROUND LOSS

Wednesday, May 9, 2012 (Brunswick, ME) – The Mount Ida College men's lacrosse team ended the 2012 spring season with a first round loss in their fourth ever trip to the NCAA Division III post-season tournament Wednesday evening falling 16-5 to #9 Bowdoin College put a close to a very successful season under the direction of ninth year Head Coach Andrew Fink. 

The Mustangs, who snatched their second straight Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory this season with a 7-4 win over Norwich University, end 2012 with a 15-5 overall record with high hopes for 2013.

Five different players tallied goals for the Mustangs led by senior attacker Zach Jacobson (Shoreview, MN/Moundsview) with a goal and an assist.  Other scores came from senior Brendan Hylan (Clinton, CT/The Morgan School), junior defender Nick Maurias (Peabody, MA/Peabody), sophomore midfielder J.T. Hoyt (Westfield, MA/Westfield) and freshman attacker Michael Trocchi (Danvers, MA/Danvers).  Junior transfer Gilson Fernandes (Saugus, MA/Saugus) added a dish respectively. 

The Bowdoin College men's lacrosse team held Mount Ida scoreless for the first 34:07. Patrick Lawlor dished out five assists for the Polar Bears in the victory while Will Wise had a team-best three goals. Christopher Anderson, Griffin Cardew, Tyler Williams and Keegan Mehlhorn also had two goals each for the hosts. Mount Ida received a single tally from five different players and was led in scoring by Zach Jacobson, who had a goal and an assist.

Bowdoin left little doubt in Wednesday night's contest as they sprinted to a 7-0 lead after one quarter and a 13-0 spread at halftime. The Polar Bears scored just 37 seconds into the contest as David Nemirov deposited a feed from Anderson. The goal sparked a 4-0 surge over the first 3:21 as Bowdoin quickly took command of the game. Meanwhile, the Polar Bear defense locked down the Mustangs, permitting just four shots in the opening half.

Michael Trocchi finally scored for the visitors at 10:53 of the third quarter, only to see Bowdoin roll off a pair of goals in a span of 44 seconds to take a 15-1 advantage. Mount Ida finished strong, scoring four goals in the final 21:04 to trim the final margin to 16-5.

Christopher Williamson played 45 minutes in goal for the Polar Bears, stopping seven shots and allowing just three goals. Michael Bottinelli played the final quarter for Bowdoin, making two stops and allowing a pair of goals. Bowdoin's defenders enjoyed a stellar outing, led by Dylan Hannes' five caused turnovers and three ground balls. Maxwell Rosner (four caused turnovers, three ground balls), Matthew Egan (three caused turnovers, three ground balls) and Sether Hanson (one caused turnover, four ground balls) all contributed to the effort.

Mount Ida senior netminder Jimmy McAllister (Smithfield, RI/LaSalle Academy) made 16 saves and allowed 16 goals for the Mustangs, who got three caused turnovers from Maurias. Bowdoin's Brendan Hughes was the top face-off man in the contest, winning 13 of his 18 chances. The Polar Bears finished with a 43-17 advantage in shots for the contest.
