Monday, April 16, 2012 (Newton, Massachusetts) - Senior attacker Zach Jacobson (Shoreview, MN/Moundsview) recorded a game-high four goals with one assist leading the Mount Ida College men's lacrosse team to a 12-5 non-league victory over the University of Massachusetts-Boston Monday afternoon on Patriots Day in Newton, Massachusetts. This is the third straight win for the Mustangs heading into a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match-up against visiting St. Joseph's College (ME) Thursday evening for senior day with game time slated for 4:00 p.m.
Mount Ida improves to an overall record of 10-4 holding a league slate of 6-1 sitting in second place in the GNAC standings while the visitors fall to 2-9 for the 2012 season with a Little East Conference (LEC) standing of 1-2.
Along with a solid performance from Jacobson, the Mustangs saw two goals a piece from junior's Gilson Fernandes (Saugus, MA/Saugus) and Nick Yacuzzi (Oakham, MA/St. John's-Shrewsbury). Senior Brendan Hylan (Clinton, CT/The Morgan School), junior's Jake Davis (Chester, NH/Pinkerton Academy) and Nick Maurais (Peabody, MA/Peabody) and freshman Michael Trocchi (Danvers, MA/Danvers) all chipped in one score each, Trocchi would also record two dishes respectively. Senior Ian Saunders (Glens Falls, NY/Glens Falls) tallied two assists while Jacobson, senior Sean Maher (Ashland, MA/Ashland) and sophomore Zach Davis (Old Lyme, CT/Xavier) notched a dish a piece.
For the visitors, sophomore midfielder Leo Ajemian (Walpole, MA/Walpole) led the Beacons with three goals. Freshman Donny Delpha (Walpole, MA/Walpole) chipped in a goal and an assist while sophomore attacker Cam Hanlon (Hanson, MA/Boston College HS) added the final UMB tally.
Sophomore face-off specialist Kyle Danehy (Marlborough, MA/Marlborough) was solid in the middle circle for the hosts going 13-18 with seven ground balls. Senior captain and defenseman Carl Grimo (Bristol, RI/LaSalle Academy) was impressive adding five pick ups and three caused turnovers. Maurais and senior defender Riley O'Brien (North Kingstown, RI/North Kingstown) recorded three caused turnovers each as well.
The Beacons were led defensively by Ajemian, senior goaltender Anthony Fitti (Havertown, PA/Haverford Senior) and freshman midfielder Nate Staples (Salem, MA/Salem) all adding six groundballs.
Mount Ida senior netminder Jimmy McAllister (Smithfield, RI/LaSalle Academy) was outstanding denying 15 UMB shots while Fitti was between the pipes for the visitors adding 15 saves as well.
While the Mustangs head to St. Joseph's College (ME) Thursday the Beacons will host conference foe Keene State College one day prior with game-time slated for 4:00 p.m.
