The Mount Ida College men's lacrosse team extended their losing streak this past Saturday with a 14-4 non-conference defeat to hosting Merchant Marine Academy in Bayville, New York. The Mustangs fall to an overall record of 0-3 and have yet to play a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest thus far.
The Mariners scored the first six goals of the contest to go ahead 6-0 through the first 16 minutes of the game including four scores from Zach Gray (Scituate, MA/BC High School) during the stretch.
The Mustangs went on the score the next two goals on unassisted scores from senior attacker Matthew Savage (Peabody, MA/Peabody) and sophomore Nick Yacuzzi (Worcester, MA/St. John's-Shrewsbury) to pull within four (6-2) towards the end of the second quarter.
The visitors added one more score; Gray's fifth of the game, heading into halftime with the Mariners holding a 7-2 advantage.
Merchant Marine started the second stanza by scoring five unanswered goals, with another two from Gray and two from junior Adam Jerlow (Parker, CO/Douglas County), to hold a commanding 12-2 lead four and a half minutes into the final quarter.
The Mustangs can back notching two consecutive goals in the last stanza with senior captain Derek Broughton (Peabody, MA/Peabody) tallying the first and the final Mount Ida goal coming from Savage, his second of the game.
The visitors notched the final two scores of the game finishing the 14-4 non-conference rout while the Mustangs remain winless.
Mount Ida junior netminder Jimmy McAllister (Smithfield, RI/LaSalle Academy) denied 12 Marine shots through all 60 minutes.
The Mustangs will travel to non-conference Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts this coming Wednesday with game time slated for 6:00 p.m.
