MEN'S LAX FALLS IN FROSTBITE CLASSIC 8-7 TO CURRY

The Mount Ida College men's lacrosse team fell for the second straight year in the 2nd Annual Frostbite Classic to hosting non-conference Curry College Saturday falling 8-7 in dramatic fashion for the 2011 season opener.  Every year since these two teams have met, in a game built on bragging rights, has only been separated by one goal with the Mustangs capturing a 13-12 win in 2009 and then falling the following year 7-6.  The Mustangs will have to wait another year to regain the Frostbite hardware falling for the season year in a row starting 2011 with an overall record of 0-1.

The Mustangs, who held a 5-1 advantage at halftime, fell in the closing minute of the contest on a score by Colonel senior John O'Donnell (Middleton, MA/Masconomet).

The Mustangs kicked off the scoring at 13:20 of the opening frame on a goal by sophomore Niko Yacuzzi (Worcester, MA/St. John's-Shrewsbury).  Curry  tied the game a minute later on junior Russell Lanham's (Silver Spring, MD/St. Vincent Palotti) first tally of the day, but the visitors netted the next four scores, provided by senior Paul Battipaglia (Clinton, CT/Morgan), junior Zach Jacobson (Shoreview, MN/Moundsview), senior Derek Broughton (Peabody, MA/Peabody) and Yacuzzi's second of the half.

The hosts fired back after intermission, eventually tying the contest, 6-6, at the 3:29 mark in the third quarter on Lanham's fourth and final goal of the afternoon. The Colonels then went ahead, 7-6, with just under seven minutes remaining when sophomore Joseph Natale (Haverhill, MA/Haverhill) picked up his third goal of the second half.

Senior Matt Savage (Peabody, MA/Peabody) scored the equalizer for Mount Ida just over two minutes later, setting up O'Donnell's heroics. The senior attacker managed to pick up the ball in front of the Mustangs' goal and send a soft, one-hopper past sophomore net-minder Jimmy McAllister (Smithfield, RI/LaSalle Academy) who was attempting to clear the ball but could not get possession.

Curry's Lanham led all scorers with five points (4g, 1a), while Broughton (2g, 1a) and Savage (1g, 2a) paced Mount Ida with three points apiece. Junior Michael Hibbard (North Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford) made 22 saves in picking up the win.  McAllister turned aside 10 shots in absorbing the loss.

The Mustangs will travel to non-conference Merchant Marine Academy this Saturday with game time slated for 1:00 p.m.
