MEN'S LAX FALLS TO COLONIALS 6-5 IN OVERTIME

The Mount Ida College men’s lacrosse team dropped a heartbreaking 6-5-overtime loss to hosting non-conference Western Connecticut State University Saturday afternoon.  The Mustangs drop their second straight falling to 1-3 overall. 

Mount Ida College junior Matthew Savage (Peabody, MA/Peabody) led the Mustangs scoring twice while Brandon Keith (Barnstable, MA/Barnstable), Derek O’Reilly (East Setauket, NY/Ward Melville), and Nick Yacuzzi (Oakham, MA/St. John's) each scored once.

West Conn sophomore Sean Macey (New Fairfield, CT) cut between two defenders, intercepted a pass, spun back toward the goal, and beat the goalie low to the left side of the net for the winning score.

Macey finished with two goals and one assist for the game.  Senior A.J. Barieri (Islip Terrace, NY) recorded a hat trick for the Colonials with three goals, while senior Adam Lanehart (Redding, CT) scored once.  Sophomore Ryan Gillis (Norwich, CT) and senior Kirk Zachary (East Islip, NY) each handed out one assist.

Goaltending and defense set the tone early in the first quarter as neither team managed to score for the game’s first 14 minutes.  With 17 seconds remaining on the clock, Savage took a pass from Derek Broughton (Peabody, MA/Peabody) and found the back of the net to give Mount Ida a 1-0 lead at the first intermission.

Savage contributed to the Mustangs’ second goal as he fed Yacuzzi with a little over two minutes gone in the second quarter to give Mount Ida a 2-0 lead.  Five minutes later, Barbieri got things rolling for the Colonials with a pair of goals less than 20 seconds apart to knot the score at 2-2.  O’Reilly scored for Mount Ida to put the Mustangs back on top 3-2, but Lanehart answered for the Colonials, evening things up at 3-3 going into half-time.

Keith scored an unassisted goal early in the third quarter to push the lead back to 4-3 in favor of Mount Ida College.  After Mount Ida’s Savage was called for a penalty, Barbieri took advantage of the man-up situation for WestConn and evened the score at 4-4.

Both teams went scoreless for the first 13 minutes of the fourth quarter as defense and goaltending once again dominated the action.  With 2:30 remaining on the clock, Macey scored on a pass from Zachary to put the Colonials ahead 5-4.  With 1:30 remaining, Mount Ida called a time-out to set up its final attack at the WestConn goal.  After only three passes, the Mustangs turned the ball over and WestConn defender Bryan Gowen (Islip, NY) scooped up the ground ball and raced behind the goal looking to clear the ball into the offensive end.  Instead of hitting his intended target up-field, Gowen’s pass was intercepted by Mount Ida’s Savage undefended and directly in front of the WestConn goal.  Savage quickly capitalized on the error and tied the game at 5-5 with just over a minute remaining to play.  Neither team managed a shot on goal in the final minute, meaning the outcome would be decided in overtime.

Mount Ida won the face-off to begin OT and promptly called a timeout hoping to end things quickly.  The Mustangs again turned the ball over without taking a shot, but this time the Colonials were successful in moving the ball to the offensive end of the field.  Zachary nearly decided things for the Colonials, but although his shot sailed just over the goal, Mount Ida was called for a penalty giving WestConn a man-up opportunity.  The Colonials worked the ball to Lanehart in his customary position to the right of the goal, but Lanehart’s shot missed the mark wide left by inches.  WestConn retained possession of the ball, but its first pass was intercepted by a Mount Ida defender to the left of the Mustang goal.  As the defender turned to pass the ball up-field, Macey anticipated the play, intercepted the pass, and hooked the ball into the near-side of the goal as he fell to the turf.  The WestConn bench and partisan crowd exploded as the Colonials celebrated the 6-5 victory.

For the game, WestConn held a 45-32 advantage in shots, while sophomore goalkeeper Tyler Martone (Chesire, CT) finished with 14 saves.  Mount Ida’s James McAllister (Smithfield, RI/LaSalle Academy) was spectacular between the pipes with 19 saves, but takes the loss in heartbreaking fashion.

Mount Ida will host their first home game of the season against visiting non-conference Amherst College Tuesday afternoon starting at 4:00 p.m.
