NEWTON, Mass. -- Freshman linebacker D'Andre Smith (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) became the second consecutive Mount Ida first-year to be honored by the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC).
Smith was named the ECFC Rookie of the Week when the awards were announced on Monday afternoon by the conference office.
Smith had a stand-out day on special teams and defense, blocking three kicks in Mount Ida's 36-25 win over Becker. The rookie got his hand on a point after attempt in the first quarter and a punt in the second quarter. He pitched in with five tackles, including one for a loss of yardage, and one fumble recovery while also breaking up a pass.
Smith, who also worked returning a punt and a kickoff for the Mustangs, follows fellow freshman running back EJ Isom (Cranston, R.I.)
Mount Ida has won three consecutive games, all of them in the conference, and have improved their record to 4-3 on the year (3-1 ECFC).
The Mustangs will play their final home game of the year on Saturday when they host Norwich. The game, which will begin with Senior Day festivities, will kick off at 12:00 pm.
