WILIMINGTON, Vt. -- Mount Ida junior defensive back Jovan Wilkins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) made his presence known on the football field on Friday night, and as a result, took two of the three weekly awards given out by the Eastern Collegiate Football Confernece (ECFC).
Wilkins was named both the Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week as the conference announced their first weekly awards of the season on Monday morning.
In a 21-20 come from behind victory over UMass Dartmouth, Wilkins led the Mount Ida defense by forcing all three of their turnovers. He came up with two interceptions, one which led to the Mustangs' first touchdown, and another which preserved the lead in the fourth quarter.
Wilkins also forced a fumble that was recovered by the Mustangs and had a team-high 7 tackles, 1.5 of them for a loss.
In a special teams role, Wilkins recorded one of three blocked kicks for the Mustangs. He also handled the kick and punt return duties, returning two kicks and a punt for 29 all-purpose yards, while having an exceptional defensive day.
Wilkins and the Mustangs (1-0) will take Alumni Field on Saturday afternoon (1:00 pm) for their home opener, when they welcome in Plymouth State.
