FOOTBALL BACK ON TRACK WITH 22-6 ECFC WIN OVER HAWKS

The Mount Ida College football team got back on track with a 22-6 Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) victory Saturday afternoon on a snow laden field in Worcester, Massachusetts.  The Mustangs improve to an overall record of 4-4 with a league slate of 3-2 heading into a key ECFC match-up in Newton, Masachusetts against visiting Gallaudet University.

The snow came down heavy and often, beginning more than an hour before the opening kickoff. The game was scoreless until the 2:56 mark of the first quarter when Becker punter Eric Glynn (West Hartford, Conn.) was tackled in his own end zone for a safety, giving the Mustangs a 2-0 lead. Jovan Wilkins (Poughkeepsie, NY/Poughkeepsie) returned the ensuing free kick by Glynn 62 yards for a touchdown, making the score 8-0.

The score remained the same until there was 9:17 remaining in regulation; Mount Ida quarterback Scott Drosendahl (East Aurora, NY/East Aurora) connected with Jordan Hyman (Middletown, CT/Xavier) in the back of the end zone on a three yard touchdown strike. The two point pass by Drosendral to Nick Lynch (Hampton Bays, NY/Hampton Bays) was converted as the Mustangs took a 16-0 advantage.

The Hawks answered back on their next possession with a ten play, 43 yard drive, resulting in a five yard touchdown scamper by freshman running back Kyle Gregg (Charlotte, N.C.). The Becker two point conversion attempt failed as Mount Ida held a 16-6 lead with 5:36 remaining in regulation.

The Mustangs put the game out of reach on their very next drive. Facing a fourth and 13 from the Becker 23 yard line, Drosendahl completed a ten yard pass to R.J. Zbikowski (Mount Sinai, NY/Mount Sinai), who proceeded to pitch the ball back to an oncoming Nick Lynch. Lynch then carried it the final 13 yards for a touchdown.

Mount Ida freshman running back Chris McNally (Bourne, MA/Bourne) ran for 96 yards on 25 carries to lead the Mustangs ground attack. Drosendahl threw for 86 yards and two touchdowns on the afternoon. Freshman Jah-son Johnson (Windsor, CT/Windsor) made a team high eight tackles on defense, including two and a half tackles for a loss. Mike Brockenberry (West Haven, CT/West Haven) chipped in with two sacks. The win moves the Mustangs to an even 4-4 overall and 3-2 in the ECFC.

Becker quarterback Bobby Baker (Monroe, Conn.) threw for a game high 84 yards. Luis Sanchez (Springfield, Mass.) led all receivers with 65 yards.  On the defensive side of the ball, freshman Asante Harris (Charlotte, N.C.) recorded a game high ten tackles.
