Women’s Tennis Notches First Conference Win of 2015

NEWTON, Mass. – Mount Ida College got their Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) schedule off to a great start on Saturday afternoon by beating visiting Anna Maria College 6-3 at Mount Ida Tennis Courts.

The Mustangs (2-3, 1-0 GNAC) won two of the three doubles matches, including an 8-3 victory at first singles from Rebecca Levy (Plymouth, Mass.) and Jenna Jarman (Auburn, N.Y.), beating Nicola Zamira (Mashpee, Mass.) and Ashley Fernandes (W. Bridgewater, Mass.).

Levy also won at first singles, besting Zamira 6-2, 6-1.

Juniors Katlyn Jesse and Danielle Barnabe (Warwick, R.I.) were also double winners for the Mustangs. They teamed up to collect an 8-2 win at third doubles over Jessica Palmer (Sutton, Mass.) and Freya Sprous (Ware, Mass.).

Jesse also earned a hard-fought win at fourth singles, besting Marissa Leonard (Billerica, Mass.) 10-7 in a super tiebreaker after losing the first match 2-6 and coming back for a 6-1 victory to tie the match at a set apiece.

Barnabe beat Palmer 6-2, 6-3 at fifth doubles, and Yuliana Chairez (Waltham, Mass.) beat Laura Cabral (Fall River, Mass.) 6-0, 6-1 to earn another point for Mount Ida at #6 singles.

Junior Callie Mulcahy (Charlton, Mass.) posted wins at singles and doubles for the AMCATS, who drop to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in GNAC play.

Mulcahy paired up with Leonard for an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles and took a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles over Jarman.

Mount Ida hits the road to continue their GNAC slate next Saturday when they travel to Suffolk for a 1:00 pm contest.

The AMCATS are home for their next to matches, hosting MCLA on Tuesday and Johnson & Wales on Saturday, with both matches set for 3:00 pm.
