NEWTON, Mass. – Mount Ida College won the final two singles matches to come from behind and collect a 5-4 victory over visiting Lesley University in non-conference women's tennis action at Mount Ida Tennis Center.
Senior Rose Schneider (Lowell, Mass.) earned the deciding point, winning her fourth singles match 6-3, 6-4 after freshman Mackenzie Bumpus (Wilmington, Mass.) had tied the match at four with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 win at sixth singles, helping the Mustangs improve to 1-2 on the year.
Sophomore Rebecca Levy (Plymouth, Mass.) and freshman Jenna Jarman (Auburn, Mass.) continued their hot start to the season with a third consecutive win at first doubles, beating Caroline Kiddie (Scituate, Mass.) and Theresa Pereira (Hopedale, Mass.) 8-3.
That was the only doubles point the Mustangs could obtain, however, as Schneider and Katlyn Jesse (Marshfield, Mass.) suffered a hard-fought 9-7 loss at second doubles to Frances DeLeon (Murrieta, Calif.) and Rose Heller (State College, Pa.).
Renee Randazzo (Gloucester, Mass.) and Danielle Barnabe (Warwick, R.I.) took a 2-1 lead at third doubles but Diana Watson (Cambridge, Mass.) and Hannah Levensailor (Ayer, Mass.) fought back with seven straight games to claim an 8-2 win and give the visitors the edge heading into singles play.
Levy and Jarman continued to roll, with Levy besting Kiddie 6-2, 6-1 at the top spot, and Jarman blanking DeLeon in straight sets at second singles.
Pereira and Watson pulled points back for the Lynx, with Pereira winning by matching 6-4 scores over Jesse at third singles and Watson beating Barnabe 6-2, 6-0 at fifth singles.
Bumpus fought her way through a first set tiebreaker at the six spot to beat Levensailor and tie the match at four points apiece before Schneider finished off Heller for the pivotal winning point.
The Mustangs travel to Curry Friday afternoon for a 3:30 pm non-conference affair with the Colonels.
Lesley falls to 1-7 on the season and will try to regroup when they travel to Becker College on Wednesday for a 3:00 pm New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) contest.
