Mustangs Into GNAC Tournament for First Time Since 2011

PAXTON, Mass.—Mount Ida dropped a 7-2 decision to Anna Maria College on Saturday afternoon in their 2014 regular season finale, but will take the court again this year, as they have qualified for the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's tennis tournament for the first time since 2011.

Mount Ida (1-9, 1-5 GNAC) will take the #6 seed in the tournament and will travel to Suffolk at 7:00 pm on Wednesday night to face the third seeded Rams.

With the win, the AMCATS (4-8, 2-4 GNAC) clinched the fifth-seed in the GNAC Tournament. They will travel to the University of St. Joseph for the quarterfinal round on Wednesday.

Mount Ida took points at first singles, where Rebecca Levy (Plymouth, Mass.) was awarded an injury forfeit victory. The Mustangs tallied their second win at No. 6 singles in extra points, as Yuliana Chairez (Waltham, Mass.) downed Marissa Leonard (Billerica, Mass.) 6-3 in the first set before Leonard rallied for a 6-2 win in set two. Chairez won the tiebreaker 7-2.

Anna Maria senior Nicole Goudreau (Harrisville, R.I.) became the all-time program singles wins leader with a 6-3, 6-1 win against Olivia Budney (Webster, Mass.).

Goudreau also teamed up with Jessica Gautieri (North Attleboro, Mass.) for an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles against Levy and Budney.

The AMCATS led 3-0 after doubles play, as the tandem of Nicola Zamira (Mashpee, Mass.) and Callie Mulcahy (Charlton, Mass.) took an 8-2 win at No. 2 singles and Katelyn Edelson (Berlin, Conn.) and Leonard made quick work of their pairing at No. 3 doubles with an 8-0 win.

The AMCATS saw a 6-0, 6-0 win by Zamira at No. 3 singles. Edelson downed her opponent 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4 singles, and Mulcahy bested Kaytlen Putnam (Falmouth, Mass.)) in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.
