Wildcats Claw by Mustangs in GNAC Action

NEWTON, Mass. – The Mount Ida College women's tennis team fell to the Wildcats of Johnson and Wales University in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on Saturday afternoon by a final score of 9-0. Mount Ida drops to 0-5 (0-2 GNAC) on the year while Johnson and Wales improves to 8-1 (2-1 GNAC).

The Duo's of Samantha Jo Borr (Westfield, N.J.) and Morgan Thompson (Fargo, N.D.), Taylor Klein (Johnson, N.Y.) and Stephanie Piperis (Yorktown Heights, N.J.) and Bridget Bertone (Wayne, N.J.) and Samantha Gambino (New York, N.Y.) swept doubles action for the Wildcats. Jo Borr and Thompson shutout Rebecca Levy (Plymouth, Mass.) and Olivia Budney (Webster, Mass.) in the first doubles action of the afternoon. Klein, Piperis, Bertone and Gambino all followed suit with doubles wins over Patti-Ann Doucette (Lynn, Mass.), Rose Schneider (Lowell, Mass.), Kaytlen Putnam (Falmouth, Mass.) and Alicia Ritchie (Andover, Conn.)

Levy, Doucette and Budney were able to take games from Jo Borr, Piperis and Thompson, while Jo Borr defeated Levy (6-4, 6-1) before Piperis ousted Doucette (6-0, 6-3) and Thompson outlasted Budney (6-2, 6-0). In # 4 singles, JWU's Klein overcame Mount Ida's Victoria Messinger (Southbury, Conn.) by a final score of (6-0,6-0). In the other singles matches, # 5 and # 6 saw Gambino beat Yuiana Chairez (Waltham, Mass.) (6-0, 6-0) while teammate Eliana Aponte (Wayne, N.J.) sped by Mount Ida's Schneider (6-0, 6-0).

The Mustangs will return to action on Wednesday, October 1st, at home against the Sharks of Simmons College with match time set for 3:00. JWU will enjoy a week off before visiting the Blue Jays of Saint Joseph (CT) next Saturday, October 4th at 12:00 p.m.
