QUINCY, Mass. -- The Mount Ida College women's tennis team started their 2014 season with a non-conference match at Eastern Nazarene College and, despite taking the first set at the first singles position, could not secure a point in a 9-0 Lions victory on Tuesday afternoon at the ENC Tennis Courts.
The Lions start the fall with a 1-0 overall record, while the Mustangs drop to 0-1 on the season.
Mustang freshman Rebecca Levy (Plymouth, Mass.) took the first set of her match against Lindsey Steelman (Darligton, Md.) by a 6-3 score, but Steelman bounced back with a 6-3 win of her own to force a super-tiebreaker, in which she edged Levy 11-9.
Eastern Nazarene captured three doubles wins to hold a 3-0 lead at the midway point of the match.
Tressa Burrello (Herkimer, N.Y.) and Steelman prevailed 8-3 at the top doubles spot over Levy and Olivia Budney (Webster, Mass.).
Jordan Cressman (Bowmanstown, Pa.) and Alecia Tubbs (Rochester, N.Y.) secured an 8-0 victory at the No. 2 position over Patti-Ann Doucette (Lynn, Mass.) and Victoria Messinger (Southbury, Conn.). Hannah Lariviere (Biddeford, Maine) and Bethany Mohnkern (Petersburg, Pa.) topped Yuliana Chairez (Waltham, Mass.) and Kaytlen Putnam (Falmouth, Mass.) 8-3 at the third doubles slot.
The hosts picked up six singles victories en route to collecting their first win of the season.
Burrello blanked Budney at the second singles position 6-0, 6-0, and Cressman earned a 6-3, 6-2 victory at the third spot over Doucette.
Tubbs and Mohnkern prevailed in straight-sets at the fourth and fifth slots over Messinger and Chairez,respectively. Eastern Nazarene won by default at the No. 6 position to cap off the match.
The Mustangs hit the road again on Saturday afternoon when they head west to a 1:00 pm game against Becker.
Up next, Eastern Nazarene will visit Regis on September 4 for a non-conference tilt.
