WOMEN'S TENNIS FALLS TO REGIS IN OPENER SATURDAY

The Mount Ida College women's tennis team kicked off the 2012 season under the direction of first year Head Coach Karen McNamara at non-conference Regis College (MA) Saturday afternoon falling 8-1 in Weston, Massachusetts.  The Mustangs fall to an 0-1 overall record while the hosts improve to 1-0 for the year. 

The Mustangs lone victory in the match came while senior Kayla Horton (Brockton, MA/Brockton) snatched a 6-2, 7-5 win over Kendall Kolb in number three singles.  Abigail Wehr (Suwanee, GA.), Jazz Hicks (Plymouth, MA) and Jewel Medeiros (Rochester, MA) each grabbed their first collegiate singles victories in the Pride win.

Regis came out strong gathering an early 3-0 lead sweeping all three doubles matches. Hicks and Wehr defeated Lizzie Olszweski (Granville, MA) and Horton at No. 1 doubles, 8-1, while Caroline Roche (Hanover, Mass.) and Medeiros took home an 8-1 win in No. 2 doubles over Julie Pagliuca and Danielle Riley (Barre, VT). The sophomore duo of Kendall Kolb (Plymouth, MA.) and Erika Palmer (Southborough, MA) rounded out doubles play with an 8-3 win at number three doubles.

In singles play, Wehr grabbed a 6-4, 6-0 win over Olszweski at number one singles for her first collegiate win, while Jazz Hicks defeated Riley in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2 singles for her first win. Caroline Roche used set scores of 6-1 and 6-3 for her win at No. 4 singles and Palmer won at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-0. Jewel Medeiros grabbed her first singles win at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-0 over Patti-Ann Doucette (Lynn, MA).

Mount Ida looks to rebound when they also take on Becker College on September 3rd in Leicester, Massachusetts.
