The Mount Ida College women's tennis team captured their first win of 2010 in a 5-4 non-conference victory Monday afternoon over hosting Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy, Massachusetts on a cloudy and breezy day. The Mustangs improve to 1-2 overall.
The Mustangs number one doubles team of senior Jessica Lindquist (Killingworth, CT/Killingworth-Haddam) and Emilie Cloutier (Lewiston, ME/Lewiston) stormed to an 8-0 win making them a perfect 3-0 on the season.
At number two doubles the Crusaders returned the favor by blanking Mount Ida number two team of Amy Warner (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) and Veronica Williams (Tyngsboro, MA/Auburn 8-0.
At number three doubles, Melissa Smith (Warren, CT/Wamogo Regional) and Nanouma Joachin (Lynn, MA/Classical) played aggressive and intelligent edging out Eastern Nazarene8-6 and giving the Mustangs a 2-1 early lead.
In singles, freshman standout Cloutier won 6-0, 6-0 and has not dropped a game in her last five sets.
At number two Williams fought hard but lost 6-4, 6-4. At number three Lindquist won the first set 6-1 but dropped the second 6-4 and lost a heartbreaker 11-9 in a third set super tiebreaker.
Warner dropped her single set losing 6-1, 6-3. Number five Smith lost the first set 7-6 (7-4 tiebreaker) then stormed back to win the second 6-2 and took the super tiebreaker 10-8 in a nail biter of a performance.
Joachin clinched the match for the Mustangs with a resounding 6-2, 6-1 win.
"This was a good win for our program," Coach Nestel.
The Mustangs will travel to Albertus Magnus College this Saturday for their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match-up of the season in New Haven, Connecticut starting at 11:00 a.m.
