The Mount Ida College women's tennis program dropped a 9-0 loss to visiting Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) member St. Joseph College (CT) Friday afternoon at the Dedham Athletic Club in Dedham, Massaschusetts. The Mustangs fall to 2-6 overall, 2-5 in GNAC play.
This match-up would decide the final spot in the conference championship getting underway this coming week. Unfortunately, the Mustangs were without their number one player Jessica Lindquist (Killingworth, CT/Killingworth-Haddam) due to injury and would prove to be key in there loss.
After the doubles finished, the Mustangs were down 3-0 going into the singles matches. Senior Amey Grella (Amherst, NH/Souhegan), playing in the one slot fought hard in the match of the day dropping a difficult loss. Her matched lasted well over two hours featuring exhausting baseline rallies but finally succumbed 6-7, 7-6, and 10-5 in the super-tie-break to decide the final set. The senior served for the match at 5-4 in the second but could not quite close the door. Freshman,
Amy Warner (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) was also in a tough three set match coming up short 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.
The rest of the team fought hard but could not quite overcome playing one spot higher due to Jess's absence.
The Mustangs will travel to Suffolk University this coming Monday for more GNAC action starting at 6:15 p.m.
