The Mount Ida College women's tennis team visited Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) member Pine Manor College winning their second match-up of the season in a 9-0 blanking of the Gators this past Saturday. The Mustangs improve their first year program record to 2-5, 2-4 in conference play.
Mustang doubles teams (scores below) were flawless not losing a game in three matches and taking a commanding 3-0 match lead.
In singles, junior captain Jessica Lindquist (Killingworth, CT/Haddam-Killingworth) led the way with a 6-1, 6-0 victory followed by freshman Amy Warner's (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) 6-1, 6-0 victory.
Senior Amey Grella (Amherst, NH/Souhegan) did not drop a game winning 6-0, 6-0 followed by Mustang sophomore Melissa Smith (Warren, CT/Wamogo) and freshman Veronica Diciccio (Stonington, CT/Stonington) who were also perfect on the day.
The match of the day belonged to Mount Ida sophomore Ariel Rich (Somerville, MA/Somerville) who, after winning a routine first set 6-1, dropped the second set 6-3. A long rally took place in the deciding third set which came down to a tiebreak at 6-6 which Rich came up with some aggressive shots to capture the marathon match, 7-6.
Mount Ida is back in action Tuesday facing non-conference foe Anna Maria in Paxton, Massachusetts.
