NEWTON, Mass. – Visiting Simmons College came to Alumni Field on Monday afternoon and scored three times in the opening twenty minutes en route to a 5-0 victory over Mount Ida College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's soccer action.
Kashka Gammon (Nashua, N.H.) and Rachel Gilbert (Falmouth, Mass.) each scored twice, and Gammon also assisted on one of Gilbert's goals for a five-point afternoon to lead the Sharks (6-6-1, 5-3 GNAC).
Mount Ida falls to 3-10 on the year (1-7 GNAC) despite a 10-save effort from freshman AnnaMarie Seiler (Biddeford, Maine).
The Mustangs were outshot 26-6, and junior Morgan Rzonca (Bristol, Conn.) managed the only Mount Ida attempt on target against Sharks junior goalie Casey Halle (Watertown, Mass.), who made one stop in seventy minutes of action before giving way to sophomore Lauren Williams (Bowdoinham, Maine).
Gammon started her brace under four minutes into the game when she took a pass from Gabrielle Klane (Franklin, Mass.) and touched it around Seiler to find herself with an open net. She then fed Gilbert four minutes later on a long ball that bounced past Seiler, leaving the freshman forward free to score her fourth goal of the season.
Gammon completed her double with an unassisted tally from a tough angle on the end line at 16:26 of the first half, and the Sharks went to the break with a 3-0 lead.
The visitors outshot the Mustangs 16-0 in the second half, though Seiler made seven stops on the second half and kept the deficit at three until the 78th minute, when senior Elise Nothacker (Philadelphia, Pa.) notched her first goal of the year, knocking home the rebound off of a corner kick, where Simmons had a 10-7 advantage overall and a 7-1 edge in the second half.
With less than a minute to play, Gilbert got her foot on her fifth goal of the year, as Allison Bondi (Macomb, Mich.) found her foot in the box to pick up the assist.
The Mustangs have just three games left in their regular season, starting with a road date against Suffolk on Saturday, October 15th at 3:30 pm.
Simmons hosts Eastern Nazarene on Wednesday at 7:00 pm in non-conference action.
