Perry Strikes Early, Mustangs Down Cadets 1-0 in GNAC Action

NEWTON, Mass. -- Mount Ida sophomore Lacey Perry (Westport, Mass.) scored her first goal of the season at the 12:19 mark of the first half when she found the ball at the top of the box, spun around and laced a ball over Norwich keeper Leandra Flores-Nieves (Colorado Springs, Colo.) for the eventual game winning goal.

With the 1-0 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory, the Mustangs improve their conference record to 1-2 while improving to 3-5 overall. Norwich drops to 1-4-1 overall while they still search for their first GNAC victory of the season.

The Mustangs controlled the pace of play for the opening forty-five minutes while knocking the ball around and making the Cadets chase. The hosts had ample opportunities in the opening minutes of the game but just couldn't find the back of the net.

It wasn't until Perry, found a bouncing ball just outside the top of the box with a lot of space to turn and rocket her shot into the back of the net to give the hosts the early 1-0 cushion.

Mount Ida continued to control the pace of play throughout the first half and had a few other scoring chances but managed to hold onto the 1-0 lead heading into the break.

As the second half got underway, the pressure from the visiting Cadets began to put the hosts on their toes as Norwich earned a few free kicks and counter attacks that came with scoring opportunities but Mount Ida netminder AnnaMarie Seiler (Biddeford, Me.) stood tall in goal for the Mustangs while earning her second career win and her first collegiate shutout.

Mikayla Lovering (Colchester, Vt.) and Perry both led Mount Ida with two shots apiece while five others managed one each. Meghan McMullen (Northfield, Vt.) had four shots for the visiting Cadets while Flores-Nieves made four saves.

The Mustangs doubled up the Cadets in corners, 6-3, while also holding the slight advantage in shots, 9-7.

Mount Ida will hit the road next Wednesday when they travel to Standish, Maine to take on St. Joseoph's with game time set for 3:30 PM. Norwich will head home and host Saint Joseph (CT) on Wednesday as well with kickoff set for 7:00 PM.
