WOMEN'S SOCCER LOSES FOURTH STRAIGHT, DOWNED BY ELMS

Monday, September 19, 2011(Newton, Massachusetts) - The Mount Ida College women's soccer team dropped a 3-0 non-conference loss, their fourth consecutive, to visiting Elms College Monday afternoon in Newton, Massachusetts. 

The Mustangs fall to 1-5-0 overall and remain 0-3-0 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) competition. 

In the 10th minute of play, Blazer sophomore Allyson Witaszek (Feeding Hills, MA/Agawam) curled a corner kick into the box that caromed off the head of a Mustang defender into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead early.

Four minutes later the Mustangs gave up another score on a cross from the right side of the 18 yard box by Blazer sophomore Cianna Gorneault (Springfield, MA/Cathedral).  Senior forward Jennifer Killion (Cambridge, MA/Mt. St. Joseph Academy) volleyed a shot into the left corner of the net on a one hop for the 2-0 advantage.

In the 23rd minute of play, Killion broke away from the defense and chipped a shot that ricocheted of Mount Ida goaltender senior Tracy Koukol (North Attleboro, MA/North Attleboro).  Senior Amanda Alvarado (Springfield, MA/Sabis International) headed in the bouncing ball into an open net for the 3-0 lead that eventually turned into the victory. 

There were a couple of chances in the second half on both sides but neither team could convert handing the visitors the victory.

 

Koukol saw her second game between the pipes for the Mustangs notching five saves for the game while Elms sophomore keeper Hayley Zisk (Baldwinville, MA/Narragansett) played 85 minutes adding six saves.  Blazer freshman Ashley LaFountain (Springfield, MA/Central) played the final five minutes with no saves.

 

The Mustangs are back in action this coming Wednesday against hosting GNAC member Anna Maria College with game time slated for 7:00 p.m.
