Wednesday, October 20, 2010 (Newton, Massachusetts) – Although Mount Ida College women's soccer goalkeeper Meghan Begins (Jericho, VT/Jericho) notched an impressive 14 saves, the Mustangs dropped their second consecutive Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) loss to visiting Norwich University 2-0 Wednesday afternoon in Newton, Massachusetts. The Mustangs fall to an overall record of 3-10-1 going 1-8-0 in conference play while the Cadets improve to 11-5-0, 8-3 in the GNAC standings.
The visitors struck in the 28th minute of the first half on an unassisted score by senior Karissa Doyon (Beecher Falls, VT/Canaan Memorial). A Norwich cross went into the middle of the box that ricocheted off a Mustang defender to the feet of Doyon. Doyon reared back and fired a shot into the right corner of the net for the 1-0 advantage.
Norwich finished the game with a garbage goal on a bounding ball outside of the box. From about 25 feet out, freshman Baylie Lamarre (Tyngsboro, MA/Lawrence Academy) hammered a shot off a volley into an uncontested goal in the top right corner giving the Cadets the 2-0 advantage and eventually the GNAC victory.
The visitors pounded their offensive half of the field with 28 total shots for the game, 16 on net. Mount Ida again struggled to generate much offense tallying on 10 shots total for the contest, seven on goal.
Opposite Begins 14, Norwich senior goalkeeper Alecia Wright (Piffard, NY/York Cental) denied seven Mustang shots.
Mount Ida will head to Emerson College this coming Saturday for another GNAC match-up starting at 3:00 p.m.
