The Mount Ida College women's soccer team dropped their sixth consecutive loss and their fifth Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) defeat Tuesday afternoon at St. Joseph's College (ME) falling 3-1 on a rainy afternoon. The Mustangs continue their slide dropping to 1-6-1 and a winless 0-5 in conference play while the Monks sit in fourth place in the GNAC standings (4-2-0) with an overall record of 6-2-0.
Mikayla Call (Portland, ME/McAuley) produced a goal and an assist in the SJC victory. Elizabeth Theberge (Danvers, MA) opened the game scoring with her first goal of the season in the ninth minute of play. Lauren Chouinard (Gorham, ME) pushed the ball to Theberge at the top of the box and beat Mustangs keeper Meghan Begins (Jericho, VT/Jericho) with a blast to the top left corner.
Although the Monks oUtshot the Mustangs by a 7-0 margin in the opening period, neither team was able muster real scoring opportunities for the remainder of the first half. Due to wet playing conditions, at least partially, much of the game-play took place in the midfield.
The 1-0 lead held until midway through the second half when the Royal Blue scored two goals in just under two minutes. With a strike past Begins from the top of the box, Call doubled the St. Joe's advantage with her sixth goal of the season at the 65:36 mark. Emily Cocciardi (Middletown, MA) was credited with an assist on the play.
The Monks' cushion was extended to 3-0 just 105 seconds later when Jennifer Keaney (Scituate, MA) found the back of the net on a breakaway, with Call collecting an assist.
With just 11 seconds on the clock, Heather Harrington (Bedford, NH/Manchester West) spoiled the St. Joseph's shutout bid with a penalty-kick goal to make the final score 3-1, Monks.
Saint Joseph's keeper Jaci Lorenzen (Windham, ME) made three saves, while Begins came up with seven stops for the Mustangs.
Mount Ida returns to action with a non-conference game at home against Becker College on Thursday at 4:00 p.m.
