The Mount Ida College women's soccer team dropped their third consecutive loss and their second Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) game in a row to the hands of visiting Albertus Magnus College, 3-0, Wednesday afternoon on a mild, breezy day in Newton, Massachusetts. The Mustangs fall to 1-3-1, 0-2-0 in GNAC play while the Falcons improve to 4-2-0 overall and a perfect 2-0-0 in conference competition.
The visitors got on the board 10 minutes into the first half on a well placed shot into the top left corner from the right side of the 18 yard box from sophomore Danielle Figueroa (Bridgeport, CT/Notre Dame Fairfield) after winning a 50/50 ball. This gave the Falcons an immediate 1-0 advantage and a ton of momentum on the offensive side of the field.
Figueroa struck again on her second score of the day in the 32nd minute of play off a corner kick from freshman Amanda Roke (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) that got caught in the pinball machine in front of the net. Figueroa reared back and hammered her second goal of the game finding the left side for the 2-0 lead heading into the second half.
The Mustangs had a couple of legit chances during the first stanza with senior captain Lindsay Lincoln (Clarksbury, MA/Drury) taking a one-on-one with the goalkeeper peppering a shot that ended up sailing wide left.
Mount Ida had a very difficult time getting any offense going throughout the second half while the Falcons continued to pound the net with shots. Freshman Brittany Ross (Ansonia, CT/Ansonia) was the final Falcon to strike on a cross from senior Sam Gigliotti Wolcott, CT/Sacred Heart) that Ross collected in front of the net poking it into the left side for the 3-0 GNAC victory.
The Mustangs fired off 12 shots, six of which that were on net, while the visitors hammered away 31 total shots, 14 finding the goal frame. Mount Ida senior goalkeeper Meghan Begins (Jericho, VT/Jericho) denied 11 Falcon shots while senior Christina Oddo (East Haven, CT/East Haven) and Christina Dineson (Milford, CT/Foran) split the halves making three saves a piece.
The Mustangs will host Simmons College this coming Saturday for another GNAC match-up starting at 1:00 p.m.
