The Mount Ida College women's soccer team dropped their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest of 2010 and their second consecutive loss of the week to visiting St. Joseph College (CT) 4-1 Saturday afternoon in Newton, Massachusetts. The Mustangs fall to 1-2-1, 0-1-0 in GNAC play while the Blue Jays stay perfect at the top of the standing at 4-0-0, 1-0-0 in conference competition.
The visitors got on the board first in the 39th minute at the end of the first half off a direct kick on the left side of the 18 yard box that was snuck into the left corner by freshman Nicole Mendelson (Southbury, CT/Pomperaug) for the 1-0 advantage heading into the break and the only goal during the first stanza.
The Blue Jays added to their tally in the 52nd minute to start the second half on a well placed through ball from sophomore Alyssa Papotto (Meriden, CT/Platt) to senior Eva Peart (Bloomfield, CT/Bloomfield) who finished off the score to command a 2-0 advantage.
The visitors kept the pressure on netting their third goal of the contest on another direct kick that was fumbled in the box by Mount Ida senior goaltender Meghan Begins (Jericho, VT/Jericho) and immediately poked into the back of the net by sophomore Kristen Whitman (South Windsor, CT/South Windsor) for the 3-0 lead in the 76th minute.
The Mustangs finally got on the board on a 50/50 ball that was won by freshman Vanessa Nunez (Hudson, MA/Hudson) followed by a well placed shot that was hammered into the left corner putting Mount Ida in the scoring column trailing 3-1 in the 78th minute.
The Blue Jays eventually netted the fourth and final goal of the contest on a through ball from Peart to Watts who would have a one-on-one with Begins sliding the ball pass her on the right for the 4-1 victory.
Begins denied 12 Blue Jays shots getting a ton of action while St. Joseph College (CT) keeper junior Holly Mirabella (Seymour, CT/Seymour) saw five shots with one save.
The Mustangs will stay home to face GNAC foe Albertus Magnus College this coming Wednesday starting at 3:00 p.m.
